New 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' Not a Remake of the Classic

With the news of a new Buffy being released comes all the overwhelming responses along with it. We have the classic purists with the sentiment that it shouldn't be touched at all. To match we have fans who have been waiting since 2003 to get their hands on more. In between we have those concerned about whether or not it is going to be the same story retold.

Luckily showrunner Monica Owusu-Breen made a statement that helped give all of us who are waiting anxiously some context in one of her verified tweets:

For some genre writers it’s Star Wars. Buffy the Vampire Slayer is my Star Wars. Before I became a writer, I was a fan,” Owusu-Breen wrote. “For seven seasons, I watched Buffy Summers grow up, find love, kill that love. I watched her fight, and struggle and slay,” she wrote. “There is only one Buffy. One Xander, one Willow, Giles, Cordelia, Oz, Tara, Kendra, Faith, Spike, Angel … They can’t be replaced. Joss Whedon’s brilliant and beautiful series can’t be replicated. I wouldn’t try to. But here we are, 20 years later … and the world seems a lot scarier. So maybe, it could be time to meet a new Slayer … And that’s all I can say.

It seems that at the very least, it will not be a remake of the classic tale. The lead slayer has been revealed to be a black actress although no casting has been determined. Monica Owusu-Breen seems to want to create a new slayer relevant to this time from a completely different perspective: a black woman. Let's face it: as much as we love the Original Buffy, don't we deserve a Slayer that isn't wearing the questionable fashion of the late 90's/ early 2000's?

Which of the fan groups do you fit? A purist? A skeptic? A hopeful? Let us know in the comments.
